| Just a few things to
touch on this month. VectorWorks 10.1.2 is now out on the streets,
so if you were still looking to get a CD rather than a download,
now is your chance. I would like to thank everyone who came out
to see us at AIA. We had a great show and an even better user
event.
If you didn't get a chance to meet up with us in San Diego, we
will be back out on the West coast this week for the PCBC show.
If you would like to attend, please sign up on PCBC's website
at www.pcbc.cc/onlinereg/reg_main.asp.
And, for you East coasters, we will be at Macworld New York from
July 16-18, so please contact us for passes.
On another note, we have launched a new ad campaign in several
new magazines that feature firm profiles. Take a look and tell
us what you think, and if you would like to have your firm featured
in one of our ads, let us know. You can find them in Architectural
Record and Landscape Architect & Specifier News. |

| PROFILE |
Neal Hammon
|
Neal
Hammon is a native of Kentucky, who graduated from Architectural
School at the University of Illinois in 1948, after serving
in the Navy on the cruiser USS Monpelier during WW2. During
most of his active career, he was a partner in an architectural
firm in Louisville, Kentucky.
He likes hunting, canoeing, and riding trail bikes in the
woods. During that time away from the office, he became
interested in pioneer trails and history, which developed
into a hobby. Upon retirement, Mr. Hammon wrote three books
on the subject of pioneer history, his latest being Virginia's
Western War, published by Stackpole Books in 2002.
|
 |
For the
first book, Mr. Hammon made necessary maps and illustrations
by hand; this was not only slow, but the finished product
was less than professional. It was especially difficult for
him to produce ordinary drawings where the necessary lettering
was neat and sized properly. |
 |
When Mr. Hammon finished his second
book, My Father, Daniel Boone, he decided to use
VectorWorks for the maps and other illustrations. For maps,
he discovered a simple trick of making one drawing of the
entire area under consideration, and using it as a template
from which other smaller maps could be cropped and enlarged.
|
 |
Text was generally put on a second layer,
and hatches and patterns on a third, which made editing
simpler. The finished versions were printed on a laser printer
and sent to the publisher. He is still using the templates
on illustrations for new articles and books. |
|
| How do
I handle invisible blocks in DXF/DWG files? |
Here are a couple of
different approaches you can take:
1) Choose preferred layer scale in the import dialog box (1:1000
or similar, depending on page size). Import. Hide Guides. Select
all. Fit to objects.
2) In AutoCAD, select all objects of interest and type the wblock
command. This will write a block as a new file containing only
those objects. The invisible objects causing the problems will
be skipped. |
| How do
I place several plants in a straight line? |
| VectorWorks LANDMARK
10 allows you to place a single plant, a cluster of plants, or
a polygon perimeter of plants.
To place a single straight line of plants, select "Cluster" in
the Place Plant Dialog box and select "Along Poly Edges."
Click in the drawing to start the polyline edge, click again in
the direction you want the plants to be placed, and then click
a third time beyond this second point. Basically, you are clicking
three times within a straight line to create two segments. |

Note |
| QuickTime™ is
a media application created by Apple™ to view various forms
of media files. QuickTime is also an essential part of the VectorWorks
program because it handles the rendering and some import/export
functions of the program. A copy of QuickTime is included on the
VectorWorks installation CD for your convenience, but we do not
support the application itself. It is an Apple program and any
QuickTime Tech Support is done by Apple. If you cannot access
your rendering or exporting options, that is a good sign that
QuickTime is not installed on your system. |
