A NOTE FROM THE CEO |

You've probably seen the beta release announcement for our IFC (Industry Foundation Class) translator. For those of you unaware of IFC technology, it is a collaboration standard for exchanging building information between design systems. It has been developed over the past ten years by the IAI (International Alliance for Interoperability), an organization comprised of representatives from companies in the design, construction, and technology sectors, as well as government entities and large facility owners and managers. The goal of IFCs is to provide a durable, shareable semantic model of a building project that (in theory) will increase the efficiency of communication and reduce project costs over a building's lifecycle. The Nemetschek group has been a world leader in the design and implementation of IFC, and, with its support for this file format, VectorWorks Architect now has model-focused interoperability based on this open standard. This augments the recent partnership with Adobe for document interoperability based on the PDF file standard. Today's global needs are to design, build, and manage a building so expansive that no single proprietary vendor format can accommodate the range of applications involved. With the support of IFC and PDF in VectorWorks Architect, our customers can now participate in the rapidly evolving world of electronic design collaboration that is gaining momentum in different parts of the world. Currently the IFC translator (a VectorWorks Architect plug-in) is a beta as we seek certification from the IAI. We'll release a final edition when requirements for certification are met. But for those of you on the leading edge of multi-product collaboration, we think we have an exciting improvement for you today. | ||

The IFC plug-ins allow VectorWorks Architect users to export VectorWorks files as IFC files, as well import IFC files from other IFC-compatible Building Information Modeling (BIM) programs. This data can then be used throughout a construction project's life cycle, for applications that include costing and quantity surveying, energy analysis, structural design and detailing, facility management and space analysis, and building performance modeling, such as code compliance and interference checking.
