Dispatch Header

We're packing our bags to spread the word about VectorWorks 11! This month, we'll be demonstrating our software at three great industry trade shows. First at the Tech Expo just a few miles down the road in Baltimore on October 15, then it's off to Las Vegas for the Lighting Dimensions International Show from October 22-24. Wrapping up October, and taking us into November, will be the American Society of Landscape Architects Show in Salt Lake City Utah from October 31-November 2. In November, we'll be going to three more shows so please check our Calendar of Events for more information. If you'll be attending any of these shows, please stop by our booth!

In other news, I'm proud to report that a great year has led us to a growth of over 20% in our staff, across the board from engineering to sales. I'm looking forward to even more growth over the next year.

Sincerely,

Richard Diehl, CEO, Nemetschek N.A.

TIPS & TRICKS

PROJECT PROFILE

Jiaing New Town Master Plan
Morris Architects, Orlando, Florida
www.morrisarchitects.com

The JiaDing New Town master plan has been envisioned as the new central focus of the JiaDing District, which consists of the JiaDing Old Town, An'ting, and NanXiang townships of Shanghai, China. This 940-acre master plan is designed to create an exciting, vibrant, youthful town center that's an important entertainment destination with a strong physical relationship to the Shanghai Circuit Formula 1 track.

The design seeks to provide a solution that is modern, yet still projects a character that is unique to China. The plan of the new town center borrows from the historic circular shape of old JiaDing town, with a modern twist. The elliptical central park forms a strong central focus and identity, with a high-density core and mixed-use development dominated by the taller, more modern buildings of the central business district. The city center has two parts, an entertainment/residential mixed-use district and the central financial/business/mixed-use district. These two areas are adjacent to each other and maintain a strong connection important to the success of each.

This design is based on the idea of creating a place for man in harmony with nature. The greenbelts connecting JiaDing Old Town, An'ting, and NanXiang are made up of large, open-park space with waterways used for transportation providing an attractive element in the park design. These make up "The Jade Necklace," which follows the shape of the Chinese character for 'man' —symbolizing man in harmony with nature. Water attracts people and it has a strong role in historical Chinese culture. The three main strands of the necklace are water, green space, and generous bicycle paths for transit and recreation. Future light rail opportunities exist within these corridors as well. The New Town master plan provides the JiaDing District a plan for growth that looks to the future, while not turning its back on the past.

Aligning Text

Have you been creating one big text block so all the text stays aligned or moving text blocks around to keep them in alignment?

Next time you need to align text blocks, try the Align/Distribute command under the Tool menu. This command is great for aligning and distributing objects vertically, horizontally, and diagonally.

Tracing Images

Convert an image into vector lines with the Trace Bitmap command.

Import the image using either the File > Import > Import Image File or File > Import > Import PICT as Picture command. Then, select Tool > Trace Bitmap and specify the trace parameters. The image is converted to vector lines.

Undocking Palettes

To undock a VectorWorks palette, click-drag it by its title bar to the desired location. To keep the palette undocked, press and hold the Control key while dragging the palette around. The palette remains undocked in the new location until you move or dock it again. Alternatively, select File > VectorWorks Preferences and click the Session tab. Deselect Enable Palette Docking.
